This weekend’s Gospel is particularly interesting for us at St. Peter Parish. Jesus visits Simon’s (Peter’s) house. Present is Peter’s mother-in-law, who is ill with a fever. Jesus cures her and she proceeds to wait on them.

First of all, this passage tells us that Peter had been married. He was probably a widower, because his mother-in-law seems to be acting as head of the household. Interestingly, Peter is the only Apostle who’s marital status we know.

In the last paragraph of the Gospel, Jesus is described as getting up early and retreating to a deserted place to pray. Alas, the Apostles soon search for him and find him.

If even the Son of God needed time away from the busyness of his life to encounter God, how much more must we need it?
